“Deserter” is a film that explores individuality in war, rather than looking at the Second World War in terms of group action and morality. It seeks to explore the moral choices made by the individual and to show, through the relationship between “Schwarzer” and “Nikolai”, that relationships and bonds are not inhibited by different nationality and language, but can flourish due to our shared humanity.
